This place has amazing reviews, and deservedly so! I discovered this with a SD native friend as it's actually 30 seconds away. Even with the high reviews I tried to temper expectations, but it was fabulous. I had the veggie special with roasted garlic. OMG. I tried not to inhale it but I failed spectacularly! I wish I could pretend I'm not going to be going here a lot... lol.

Best pizza in OB! Probably the best in San Diego county too!

very friendly service, great pizza, HUGE sandwiches and awesome location. I sat outside so that I could get the street view and stimulation. I enjoyed it. I also found that their selection of slices was enormous and all appeared fresh and the piece i had was very tasty.

Excellent food all around. I'm from New York and I love the pizza, the philly is amazing as well. Great service.

On vacation and I love finding spots like this. The kids had pepperoni which looked greasy to me (doesn't all pepperoni look that way?), but they loved it. Hubby had the cheesesteak sandwich which was delicious. I had a slice of the pesto, red pepper etc. it was to die for. Crust was perfect!! The staff was awesome and very helpful.

OH MY GOSH, I can't believe I have never been here until today! I was always a die hard pizza port fan but I always kinds hated the fact that pizza port only does slices during lunch time and it's only certain slices you can get. Surfrider Pizza is da bomb! They have a special, two slices and a drink for $6.50. Came here for lunch with my boy today and we were both so blown away by everything. The pizza is amazing, the crust is perfect! Crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside but also thin so the bread doesn't overpower the toppings. They also have some amazing salads here, I got the best greek salad I've ever had! And I think they make all their salad dressings from scratch! The lady who was working that I'm pretty sure was the owner was so nice and engaging. She even gave us a free sticker! I didn't get a chance to try any of the yummy desserts but they looked amazeeee! Great service, and delicious food. Definitely another hidden gem in OB, I'll be back soon!

Solid, especially from a structural point of view (thin but crispy AND chewy). And the location can't be beat if you're on this side of OB and need a quick bite. Not a destination pizza joint, but a local standout and a great pie for a night in. Or for the 2-slice-and-beer deal if you eat there. Some pies are better than others and it's true that it sometimes lacks consistency -- seems to depend on staff and time of day, but this is OB -- but what I like about Surfrider is how good the random and/or theme pies are. As others have noted, the BBQ chicken is especially good, but there's always something yummy in the case. My husband is crazy about their riff on Hawaiian. Out of all the ones I've tried, I always go back to the signature pie eventually -- which involves Gorgonzola, roasted garlic and diced tomato. YUM. Try it. Also, the organic teas are awesome. I don't care for the desserts, but having real brewed iced tea with flavors like white peach? Love. Finally, what I just want to say (from the bottom of my East Coast-born heart) is THANK YOU Surfrider for doing soup now that that ocean breeze is officially cold. I can't get enough soup from November - February, but it's hard to find a place I can walk to AND grab a cup of hot, fresh soup from that isn't either greasy, old, unoriginal or full of heavy cream. I'm not even that particular, but soup in San Diego in general is hit or miss. I tried the chicken tortilla, and it was great -- again, like their pies, not entirely what you'd expect it to be, but hot, spicy (jalapeños, mm) and fresh. Hubby overheard someone rave about the tomato basil; I'll be back for that one next.

Just had the best pizza of my life! The coconut caramel cheesecake is amazing! And that's all I have to say about that! No....wait...OMG!

DUDE if your in need of some "Soul Glow" after you eat, don't fret. Seriously I didn't realize a pizza could produce this much grease?! The dang box was was practically a puddle when we were done. Staff was super nice, ingredients were good. But honestly I may need a break from italiano after this ride. Not sure what the hype is about??? Am I missing something...maybe there putting mdma in the crust I don't know, I couldn't get to the crust I was waving for a life guard while drowning in my sea of grease. Did I mention it was greasy????? Lololol....I don't know maybe better while drunk.

Wawaweewa. FANTASTIC pizza. Made to order pies are hot, fresh, delightful. Thin crust but HUGE slices. The pies are a little more expensive than you might pay elsewhere, but worth the price. They have a deal that is like $7 for two slices and a drink (I think, might want to double check on that), which is worth it because again, the slices are really big. Standouts include the BBQ chicken gorgonzola and the pesto. They have a nice selection of beers, homemade desserts, and calzones, too. Anyway, the guys who work there are really nice, the food is delicious, and I just love when a cold, rainy day comes around and I can feel good about ordering a fresh pizza to bring home with me. Damn. Now I'm hungry.

for a girl from the east coast. i know good pizza. i worked in a pizza place for about five years. to move 3000 miles away and be able to find that great tasting food. not only pizza but cheese steaks is a blessing. i have never been disappointed with the service or food. my fiancés and my own favorite places to eat. keep up the great work everyone!!!! and for anyone to say they do not like their food doesnt know good food. for anyone who hasn't tried menu options yet you must stop whatever it is your doing and go there now! i promise you will leave happy!!!

-Polite, friendly staff -Solid pizza; not my #1 favorite in OB but pretty good. -Good menu selection of pizza, sandwiches, deserts -Actual restaurant lacks some charm, I've never been compelled to eat there, but always take it to go.

10/10 would eat here again. They are pizza wizards, no joke. Thin crust without being soggy, delicious cheese that isn't sopping with grease, and fresh delicious toppings. New favorite pizza place. The dirty Dom is really a spicy lovers paradise. We also got a red velvet cupcake, a mint cupcake, and a coconut bar. If you like a lot of frosting, you'll love it because its delicious. Staff is also very friendly and welcoming.

Great pizza but don't know how to layer a pizza. I'm from Chicago.... When I order extra sauce I want it where the sauce goes not sprinked on top in strips of sauce?!? Lack of common sense to me. Also, add more cheese, I mean for a $25 pizza I expected more. Good flavors and toppings, nice staff.... But work on making a pizza how a pizza should be made!!

I LOVE SURFRIDER PIZZA! DELICIOUS!! Everything is! From Salad to Pizza to Desserts! I gotta say this is the best pizza in town! My favorite is the BBQ pizza but you have to start with a salad with their homemade dressing (roasted garlic!! YUM). The pizza is a piece of art! I love it so much that I even ordered it when my family was over so they could try it! And they too agreed that it's amazing! This place has it all - the desserts are not only beautiful but so flavorful! I've tried about everything (LOL) and you can't go wrong with what you pick. They have everything for everyone - the healthy treat to the chocolate lover! But my most favorite is the carrot cake cheesecake that I had this week. OH MY GOSH! That's all I kept saying as I took bite after bite! The staff is as awesome as the food! Kind, helpful, and just all around FUN people. The owners really love what they do and you can tell by the love that is poured into their creations! It's a great place to hangout, eat up, and enjoy!! TRY it today!!

Best pizza in the ocean beach area. Definitely a must when you are in that area. Their dessert selection is the best!

This pizza place seems like a nice hole in the wall. It has deserts and it also has the cafe feeling along with drinks. I would recommend if you are trying to get a smalltown good old fashioned greasy pizza.

Ordered ahead of time, was told 25 minutes, ended up being 50. Wife and myself both got upset stomach within 30 minutes of eating the pizza. Food wasn't tasty either. Wanted to love it, couldn't even like it.

The place is kind of a hole in the wall...kind of dirty looking. They do allow dogs in which is pretty awesome. The pizza is very good with great crust. They offer great variety of toppings. Staff was very friendly and helpful. I will definitely be back!

  • Ashley R.

I'll start off by saying that the pizza is really good. One of the best I've had in San Diego. However, service is pretty bad. This is the type of place where (as evidenced tonight) you can walk in and have the guy at the counter ignore you for 10 minutes before placing your order, which he says will take at least 30 minutes (for a Stromboli). So, just be prepared to wait. We haven't had it this bad the past few times, but we do feel like we could have been acknowledged or told about the long wait much sooner. Clear that he was overwhelmed. We've waited before for our pies, but we were always acknowledged and helped sooner. That's 10 minutes we could have had having our Stromboli baked! So, we had to leave, frustrated.

Great little pizza place. Dog friendly...with leash hooks and after the pizza.. we get desert!

  • Antonio M.

Good pizza, owner is extremely nice and helpful too. Small place in OB, all locals go here for the most part which makes it great. I tried the BBQ chicken pizza, the pesto and tomato garlic with white sauce. All were great but my favorite was the pesto with artichokes on top.

  • Jeff B.

Wow. With so many great reviews I had high hopes for Surfrider but, sadly, was disappointed. The sauce was ok. Lots of it which is unusual. Unfortunately, the sauce had the taste that I've come to hate from San Diego pizza -- that nutty/bitter flavor where the garlic first hits you then thyme builds on that with a hint of rosemary and the slight fennel bite at the end. I prefer a simple sweet garlic tomato sauce. L The cheese was gritty. I've had gritty cheese from quite a few San Diego pizzerieas and maybe they just loaded it down with too much cheese but it had a sharp aftertaste like it was a mix of mozz with too much provolone. I don't mind provolone and its smokey aftertaste wouldn't have mattered if It weren't for the gritty texture. They probably aren't using whole milk mozz which has a smooth, gooey consistency but I guess times are tough. The pepperoni was overpowered by the sauce so I couldn't really tell you if it was spicy or not. As far as I could tell, it wasn't anything great. In fact the slices were much smaller than I expected from the photos. I also got sausage which I admit was a brave move on my part. Most pizza joints in San Diego take the low road on sausage and go with the cheapest option they can find for some reason. There are a few places in SD where I can get really good sausage on my pizza and Surfrider isn't one of them. Sliced sausage just doesn't do it for me. In fact, I find it disturbing. Sausage needs to be crumbled and massaged in a skillet over medium heat with love. That tucks flavors away in those nooks and crannies to be unlocked later. Sausage sliced into pork pancake are just flat, greasy and lifeless. I'm not a fan. The crust was crispy but flavorless. It needed a little salt and lacked structure and lift. Suffice it to say that a better crust wouldn't have saved this pizza but, by the same token, the crust with better toppings, cheese and sauce could have worked. Sadly it didn't come together tonight.

Now, I'm fully aware of the fact that cheese is mold. I still like it. I still eat it. I'm probably never going to stop. At the same time, when it comes to blue cheese, I'm not a fan. Veins of green or blue mold running through my food doesn't appeal to me at all -- in taste or in texture. I feel like I'm eating something spoiled and fuzzy. That being said, I enjoyed the sporadic pieces of Gorgonzola on Surfrider's roasted chicken barbecue pizza. The pizza itself is visually appealing, but the occasional bite of "funk" really offsets the sweetness of the barbecue sauce. It was truly awesome. I've never had a bbq chicken pizza with this ingredient on it before, but I think more places should follow suit. Also, the guys who work their are super friendly and funny, and the dog ties outside are very helpful to those of us with four-legged babies. :) For dessert, the carrot cake whoopie pie is a "must" if you like carrot cake. It's delicious and moist. The s'mores cookie was great too, with a thick slab of chocolate in the middle, topped with some sort of marshmallow cream. Yum!

My most favorite slice in all of San Diego. Order the "surf rider" and you will not be disappointed! Also, they have a killer bakery there for deserts and random, but the home made dog treats are puppy-crack (in a good way). This place is a local OB secret that deserves attention.

This place makes some pretty good pizza. I came in for lunch and had their daily special of two large slices of pizza and a drink for $6.50, but with a totally awesome Yelp check in, you get 10% off, so it came out to $6. The pizza slices I had were a pepperoni and a pesto with spinach and ricotta. ( yelp.com/biz_photos/surf… ) For my beverage, I had their organic blood orange iced tea ( yelp.com/biz_photos/surf… ). The pizza was quite good. Both slices had a crunchy thin crust with good flavor ( yelp.com/biz_photos/surf… ). The pepperoni was very good. The sauce was a little tangy with a hint of sourness towards the end, and the pepperoni slices were tasty with a bit of spiciness ( yelp.com/biz_photos/surf… ). A good pepperoni slice. The basil pesto, spinach, and ricotta slice was great. It had a nice amount of spinach, dotted with fresh ricotta, and a very well made pesto ( yelp.com/biz_photos/surf… ). If I had any suggestion, it would be that felt that both slices needed a little more mozzarella. I like when you have that elastically stringy cheese with every bite. They also make a melee of desserts, including these little devils filled with a cream cheese frosting ( yelp.com/biz_photos/surf… ), and for those who are not in the mood for pizza, you can order a scrumptious hoagie. The people who run the show here are friendly and quite hip. After all, they let me in...

The Dirty Dom is amazing! I didn't order any deserts by some miracle but they looked phenomenal! The guy working was super nice and stayed polite even when another patron was being rude. When I was waiting for my order he offered me the wifi password and a drink. Great place:)

Sorry to be so disappointed by Surfrider, but it just did not live up to expectations. It's a fun location and the staff was nice, but I just picked up my order and left to enjoy my pie with a few other people. My favorite pizza joints in San Diego include Bronx, Long Island Mike's, Blue Ribbon, and Basic. Surfrider za just does not compare. Here's the thing about pizza: When you take amazing (thin) crust, and combine it with fresh tomato sauce and gooey cheese, it is irresistible. That is a recipe for overeating and testing anyone's self control - mine especially. But I had no problem controlling myself at Surfrider. That's a terrible sign. If I can control myself, it's not great pizza. There are not that many foods that will drive me to eat myself to discomfort. Pizza is one of them. But after one slice, I was done. In fact, prior to finishing the first slice, I was considering cutting my losses. It's disappointing za, brah.

This place is great! Two slices and a beer for ten bucks and the pizza is great craft beers yum. Nothing on tap which is a bummer but not a deal breaker.

  • Sunny D.

What's not to like about Surfrider? Pizza by the slice, check. Many options (including veggie), check. Nice outdoor seating with a cool breeze, check. Helpful staff, double check. I would suggest any pizza with the roasted garlic on it, yum. BBQ Chicken pizza was also good. This is thin crust pizza that is great for a snack, but if you're depending on it as a meal, you may need to supplement your slice with something else. Also, there are delicious looking cupcakes, in the case that I did not try. Maybe next time. Instead I had a carrot cake cookie (mud-pie style with cream cheese filling). It was just okay, I would pass on it next time, I did not know that it had oatmeal and raisins in it too. Parking may be hard to find and relies largely on street parking.

This is our go to pizza in OB. Pies are consistently good. LoVE the bakery and baked goods section. Their cream filled carrot cake pies are to die for! Staff is always friendly as well.

My friend Michael grew up in Philly--(I grew up on the CT Shoreline)--so I knew that I could trust Michael's suggestion for a good east coast pizza. (Seriously, how do the people who grew up here love Pizza Port? It's just BAD.) Well I certainly was not disappointed with Surfrider, this is a legit east coast-style pie. Perfect crust, great sauce, cheese and toppings. No need to leave Ocean Beach for a FANTASTIC pizza!

On vacation in the area, my young son and I tried this place based on its 4.5/5 star rating. It was UNDERrated! Seriously, the pizza is delicious, ingredients seem high quality, recipes are creative, and the guys running the place are super friendly and helpful. I loved Surfrider, and will recommend it to all of my fellow vacationers who (frequently do) visit the Mission Bay area!

I bookmarked this place as a noshing possibility for our puppy vacation to SD. It looked promising... tasty pizza, dog friendly, cold beer. It was everything it lived up to be and more... The service was great. Super kick back staff and very informative and helpful about the menu. They led us to the patio and brought the pup a water dish. The pizza slice selection is great. Lots of veg choices. The slices are huge. We took advantage of their 2 slices and a beer special. Pizza was deeeeelish! I had a veg slice that had blue cheese... not normally a fan of blue cheese but this was good. Not a huge beer selection but a good one. Surfrider is reasonably priced and had delicious food! Highly recommended!

My new favorite spot! Stopped by on the way back from Dog Beach and what a surprise. Nine different slices to choice from, and from all accounts, all delicious. Nice, shady porch which is dog friendly really adds to the experience. Two slices and a drink for $6.50? 9.50 with a IPA? Sign me up. Unfortunately they now don't open until 3pm, so I can't make anymore lunch breaks there. A little off the beaten path, but worth the wander.

Really enjoyed going here after a storm and surfing, we were beat and super hungry and knew just the place to stop for a quick bite. Apparently they had just been slammed with a rush and we're mostly out of pizza by the slice. The super friendly staff member looking exhausted and sweaty from the heat, got us slices from a fresh pie and well I wasn't disappointed, thanks surf rider!

This place reminds me of the great thin crust pizzas of the North East. Now there's no need to suffer an existence of living in Brooklyn simply for the pizza when I can come here instead! Bravo!

Hidden gem. Best pie in OB. Get a slice of their namesake (the surfrider) for a magical pizza experience. Probably the best crust in San Diego. I'm not into bumper stickers but I fly theirs on my ride. By the way, I'm a NY born greasy guido by birth rite so this review ain't no joke .

The tastiest, most creative pizza ever. I love to sneak away for a couple slices at lunch as often as I can. Super friendly service and always a great experience. There are so many delicious, ever changing options. Not to mention, they have a crazy amount of sugary selections to choose from if you have a sweet tooth. Easy to pop in and grab a few things especially in this part of OB. The parking is never a problem over here. Pizza is made with LOVE!

Best pizza in OB hands down! It has delicious thin crust and the perfect amount of toppings. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the buffalo chicken pizza! I had the BBQ chicken one today and it was great as well. I wasn't a huge fan of the just cheese, but it did get cold by the time I ate it (walked to the beach,) so idk if I can totally rule it out just yet. The fact that they have pizza by the slice the whole time is awesome. They always have like nine different pizzas!!! AKA you can always try something new or stick with what you love. The pizza doesn't look greasy and make you feel like crap like fattening fast food pizza. The baked goods look like the most delicious things in the world. I'm allergic to egg, or I would literally buy all of them every day....and get really fat! Pizza Port is my second favorite place...thicker crust. Their flavor isn't as good as Surfrider's though! Surfrider seems to only have beer/craft beer in bottles, which is my ONLY negative thing. But I really enjoy getting pizza to go and eating it on the beach anyways. It does seem to have a cute inside and outside. I think it would be a good date place! One last thing....the employees are always so nice. The guys at night are always so friendly! Everyone looks like they're always busy working, instead of just hanging around, which is refreshing to see. =D Don't just walk by it for a few years like I did... FREAKING TRY IT! PS: If you guys ever think of getting rid of the buffalo chicken pizza...please let me know so I can buy like 30 of them and freeze them for the rest of my life!

I love OB and the laid back nature. I chose to go to this little place for my birthday dinner because one, I had spent the whole day hanging out at dog beach and two, I wanted to be able to take my bulldog to my birthday dinner :) So straight outta the ocean, we all walked to Surfrider, sand on our feet and all, I tied my dog to the outside railing D ring, (they have tie downs specifically for dogs) and went in and ordered. The guy up front even brought out a bowl of water for my dog. To the right under the glass case, they have pizzas to choose slices from, they are pretty big, you tell the guy which ones you want and he reheats in the oven, super hot! I chose, the basil pesto something, and the buffalo wing pizza, good taste. sat outside on the covered porch. I love low maintenance dining, especially with my dog.... :) life is good.... when you are in OB... On my second visit, I got a torpedo, oooooohhhh fresh bread, lots of meat, oooooh the best sandwich ever.... I got the Italian one I think... can't remember, I must be getting old... hahahahah

I really wasn't expecting such a small shop when I stepped in, but I was glad that there was nobody sitting in to eat there. The people who worked there were super nice and friendly. Although the pizza looked a little unappetizing at first since they were just all sitting there, the food really surprised me after they heated it up. The crust was deliciously crisp and thin, just the way I like it. They had a deal where you could get 2 slices and a soda for $6.50 or 2 slices and a beer for $9. Pretty sweet if you ask me. Because of the great food, great service, and great price, I think this place deserves 5 stars!

The pizza is consistently delicious... and the crust is amazing! Try the white garlic gorgonzola. And the rib eye chili is perfectly sweet. I'd die for a spicier version! Someone is stepping it up in that kitchen, so keep an eye out!

My kind of place!!! I come to OB once a year with the pooch for me to relax and for her to play. I was sitting in my room looking for a place that would deliver pizza and of course went to Yelp. I found the highest rated place was Surfrider Pizza Cafe, but they don't deliver. However, being that the place is a short walk to Ocean Villa Inn, where I'm staying, I decided to check it out and see what the hype is all about. I was not disappointed. The place is small and quaint. Unlike oter places that sell pizza by the slice, they had a huge selection. I opted for the special, two slices and a beer (one pepperoni and one "house special"). They also have an impressive selection of beer for such a small joint. I had a Fat Tire. The slices were large, New York style (I'm a native New Yorker), thin crust with a nice crunch when you bite into it. I'm getting hungry again just writing this. The "house special" has a nice blend of flavors that merge well together. Pizza was hot, beer was cold. Gotta love it. Great pizza at a great price. Now I know what the hype is all about. I'm going back today to check out the stromboli. If it's anything like the pizza, it's gonna be awesome. Service comes with the smile. The guy was so cool, he started telling me about places to go while i'm here if I want a different type of food. Who does that? Someone that's not afraid of letting you enjoy your stay and knows you will come back there for pizza because it's THAT GOOD. He also gave me coupons for my next visit. Got a dog? No problem. They have a small dog friendly patio where you can hang "belly up" as if in a bar, or sit at a table. Mind you, the place is really small, but comfortable. Two thumbs up to Surfrider Pizza cafe. They certainly live up to the hype!!!

I dig this place. I was desperate for some quick food on my way to a volleyball game in OB. Thankfully Surf Rider was right by where I parked and had pizza by the slice. The staff was super friendly and cute. I had a slice of pep and a slice of bbq chicken and both were great. The bbq chicken even had some blue cheese, which was a nice surprise. I'd love to go again when I actually have some time to sit and chill outside and have a beer.

Have you ever walked by a place every day, have patronized it once or twice, but forgotten to give them a yelp?? Sorry Surf Rider team..MY BAD. Because it was my 3rd visit last night, and it just gets better and better! This tiny quaint very neighborhood 'lil pizza place may be overseen, because it used to be a bakery. What's the best part, is the kitchen, because the past owners had to leave behind ALL the BEST bakery ovens, pizza oven, and I think some of the best recipes for fresh pizza dough. The dough is the foundation, the ingredients are fresh, they only cook to order (by popularity of the neighborhood) so they are creative with the toppings, but ALWAYS have the staples peperroni

I can't imagine giving this joint anything less than 5 stars! High quality ingredients, delicious flavor combinations, and crispy crust all conspire together to make you want to keep eating long after you are full. I can honestly say this just might be the best pizza I've ever tasted! With a friendly staff and close-to-the-beach location, you will want to come back again and again!

Not only are the employees incompetent the management seems to be as well! Complete disregard towards customers satisfaction. And utterly rude and disrespectful. From phone calls to yelp posts, I am amazed by the way they handle customer complaints.

Great pizza for a really good price. They also have beer and desserts. I have yet to try the desserts but they look delicious. They are handmade by the owner. The guys that work there are super friendly and chill. I like the patio area. This place is kind of a dive on the outside but it is quality food. Support local small businesses!

If you are looking for a great quick place to grab a few slices and a dink this is your spot. They always have several types of pizzas by the slice and they are LARGE slices, my personal favorite is the OB and the Bacon Ranch. Be sure to try the fresh brewed organic tea's and the whoopee pies! Staff is super nice and they are dog friendly !

I like Surfrider's crust but, especially lately, they put way to much salt on the pizza. I can understand a little salt, but holey-moley the last two pizzas I picked up from them tasted like it was baked at the bottom of the dead sea.

  • Marc H.

I would give their pizza a 3.5 if that were an option. This is New York-style pizza and is as good as I've had in NYC. I give it a slight edge over Newport Pizza a few blocks away- both by the slice as well as whole pies. Surfrider's beer selection is ok, but by no means the taps that you see elsewhere in OB. The guys working in there are super nice, though, and if you're on that side of OB please give it a shot.

Excellent little place by the beach! The 2 slices & drink for $6.95 is awesome and well worth it. The pizza is thin and super crispy, NY-style. As a vegetarian, I appreciated the cheese slice and the spinach/garlic. Grateful to have found it through Yelp!

Yummy thin crust pizza by the slice. Friendly staff. Hmm, I'm gonna go get a piece right now!..OK! I'm back. Confirmed. Hot, delicious, really nice guys at the counter.

Delicious and very polite service. Their house pizza ("Surfrider") is so, so good! Prices are fair and the beer selection is fantastic. They were under construction during my first visit - so I am looking forward to the real experience in the near future.

This place is great. They have the best pizza in OB and the staff is all really friendly. My wife loves the desserts as well.

I love this place. I was visiting San Diego and Ocean Beach and my friend took me here who is a regular. It was delicious. I had the hot wing flavored pizza. Yum. They also had these good caramel blondies and red velvet whoopie pies. The mint ice cream looking dessert looked good as well, but I did not try that. The folks that worked here were nice and friendly, too. I will definitely come back here if I am ever in the area.

First time I went here I thought it was good. Had a slice and a Greek salad. Thought the pizza options were limited compared to what the menu displays but no big deal... overall was good. Went back today to get a slice and salad again and the slices looked like they had been sitting and not very many variety once again. They had no pesto, no white pizzas, and there were whole pepperoni, cheese, meatlovers, etc. Flavors kind of lame... so I skipped the pizza. Got just the Greek salad. As I'm eating it I realize the lettuce looks not as fresh/some brown spots but keep eating. Then on the lettuce I see a little black thing (Fly) so I take the salad from that area and throw it out... few bites later another fly. Threw it away at that point. I get that lettuce is prone to bugs but come on... wash it better!! So gross and unappetizing! It wasn't a regular fly it was a small black one and there were 2 maybe more in one single salad. Not okay.

Great thin crust pizza in one of my favorite area of town. Staff is very friendly as well, have only tried a couple of their pizzas but they've all been excellent!

Now i'm receiving hate mail from the surfrider staff. These people are complete losers.

Great prices, friendly staff, tons of choices and delicious dessert! Enjoyed a wonderful weekday afternoon lunch here. Place was clean, convenient, and a comfortable environment. Would def go back again. Try all the organic iced teas while you're there! And they have treats if you bring your pup! Will definitely be bringing our dog next time.

Finally... A place that cares about both their food and their customers. I have had nothing but good experiences here. The staff are very friendly, especially the owner. They are always in a good mood and down to a have a quick chat. I feel like places like this rarely exist, so don't miss out! Even though you should come just for the vibe, I guess I'll mention the food. THEY CARE AND THEY CREATE QUALITY. Surf Rider may not be upscale, but they know their stuff. The BBQ chicken is the best BBQ chicken I have ever had! The add gorgonzola cheese to it which makes it to die for. Don't forget about their sandwiches either. The cheesesteak and hot ham and cheese are my favorite. The chicken and garlic one is good too, but you better be prepared for some garlic. They even have desserts (which I must say are pretty solid) from sorbet (that is local) to cookies, to lemon bars. They have salads too, but I just haven't had a moment to try them. I think they have a motto (or at least this is what someone told me): IT'S FOR FOODIES YO! True Statement. BTW get the pizza by the slice, it is better than getting a whole pie. 2 slices and a soda for $6!!!

  • Mel Y.

This place is flipping amazing! The service is awesome - honestly the most friendly people in Ocean Beach! Not to mention the pizza is hands down the best pizza I've ever had - and they have vegetarian pizza! The vegetarian surfrider is delicious and my meat eating cohorts are raving about the meat loaded pizzas as well! If you're in the OB... try this place - you won't be sorry! We've been here for 5 days and have eaten at Surfrider 3 times!! We'll be going back before we leave again. =)

Good pizza but I really like the subs. They have one with blue cheese and turkey and ham, so good! Great local spot.

  • Sean L.

Good Pizza and Deserts - What? Came in right at 9 PM and asked what the freshest pie was and I ended up with two slices of pepperoni, hit the spot. Very similar to east coast thin/ medium crust pizza. Good cheese and dough texture. Not greasy or heavy, but nice and crisp. Now surprisingly there was a case of deserts hanging out front. Got a carrot cake cookie and brownie. The carrot cake cookie was better then the brownie, but both were very good. The guy serving us was very pleasant, helpful, and friendly. We struck up a conversation about what was done with the left over pizza. I would eat here again if back in OB.

Fantastic Pizza! The OB special is loaded with great taste Large Pizza for 20 bucks. My favorite Pizza in San Diego by far. Now I'm hungry I am going to order a OB Special now. Ha Ha

  • Melanie C.

Yum! Seriously--yum! Almost perfect thin crust pizza with lots of fun topping options. I dug the garlic and Gorgonzola. I also liked the pesto and ricotta, though it wasn't quite as flavorful. The dark chocolate macaroon is nothing special, but the pizza is! If you're looking for atmosphere, though, you'll probably want to keep looking, unless you take the pizza to-go and create your own at home;-)

  • Matthew W.

Pizza is great also good specials $8 for 2 slices and a quality beer. The sandwiches suck. My girlfriend and I have tried 3 including one the staff made up for us and they just are not good. They are bland or miss the point of what they are supposed to be. Stop in for the pizza avoid the sammies.

Pretty good for california. And the sell by the slice too.

The signature pizza. Four words= too legit to quit! Another reason I love San Diego. their carrot carke cookies too were bomb.

I love Ocean Beach. I want to live there. After spending my 3rd day on the beach, I stopped by here for lunch, and it was effing delicious. I ordered a slice of cheese and a slice of pepperoni, and they were great. Big slices with good flavor. With a soda, it came out to 6 bucks. Not bad at all. My life mission is to live in OB along the beach, and when I do, I will be frequenting this place quite a bit.

  • Juje J.

Surf Rider makes the Best Thin Crust Style Pizza in Ocean Beach. The service is great, the pizza is excellent and the prices are a steal for the $6 I'm spending for two slices and a drink. This place has a lot of potential and I'd seriously like to see a little more on the menu (like a pizza with pesto sauce) So why am I giving Surf Rider Pizza Cafe 4 stars instead of 5? One of the two slices I ate had a slight doughy texture to it. Don't get me wrong, the flavors were excellent and the chances are, it was probably one out of a thousand that something like that could ever happen...it just happened on the day I went there. Other than that, the pizza was great and I would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Ocean Beach.

  • Bradford S.

This is not your average start up. It's an excellent pizzeria. This is the exquisite result of an excellent baker with the right organic ingredients to match. Not only is this establishment inviting and friendly, but they put character and a unique flavor into a small town type pizzeria. Don't be fooled by the other pizza imposters, of ocean beach. This place IS the diamond in the rough! The secret garden of delicious pizzas and desserts. The owner is a true artist and the employees ooze character and only improve the quality of service other pizzerias wish they could encompass. I could go, on and on, however I won't, I will end this review on one word. Cupcakes!

Came for OB 4th of July, husband walked over and brought us back a pizza on the beach. Got the house special with gorgonzola, garlic, basil. Perfect crust, huge slices. Kinda greasy, but didn't care. Husband also got us a cheesecake brownie, nom. Hit the spot, especially since we got to the beach at 8 am for parking. Just munched on pizza aaalll afternoon.

Oh OB how I count the ways I love thee.....and this pizza place is one of the ways!! The surf rider pizza is the BEST just order that! The garlic gloves they put on there.....YUMMMMYYYUUUMMMM. Don't do that one on a first date...hahaha....killer garlic breath but SO good!I don't think I'll ever order from stupid dominos or papa johns again! The large pizzas are HUGE and full of great toppings! We will for SURE be back!

  • David C.

Great Pizza option in Ocean Beach and one of the best I can remember in San Diego. We had the Chicken with Roasted Red Peppers and Gorgonzola Pesto. The service was good and it only took about 15-20 minutes to prepare. Highlights of the pizza were the cheese and the chewy crust. The stromboli's looked huge and worth a try next time.

  • Chris S.

Pizza and deserts were all very good in this small pizza shop but you do not necessarily get the feeling of cleanliness when you walk in. The floor seems dirty and the the tables and chairs could all use a little work. The glass case upfront shows off their great selection of home made deserts and to the right upon entry their pizza by the slice. We had a few plain cheese slices and a Gorgonzola, roasted garlic, and white sauce pie that was pretty darn good. The crust is crunchy which I like and the cheese is pretty good. Like most places in this area it seemed as though the staff could care less about us being there. Service is not something they seem to consider and sure we are tourists but you would think they would recognize that our dollars work the same as locals. Parking can be a challenge as it is in the middle of a residential area.

MMMM......best NY style pizza I've had in SD. Bought a few Groupons to try this place out, I figured I couldn't lose on pizza, and well, this place exceeded my expectations. Which is saying a lot. The Surf Rider is THE best pizza I think I've ever had period. The crust is the unexplainable NY style crust, thin, tasty and not heavy/doughy. The salads are delicious and not skimpy by any means. The location is a block from the beach and it has it's share of rushes/crowds, so don't expect 5 star service at a counter service pizza joint filled with beach goers and the occasional inebriated college kids. The counter folks, who also make the pizza, do a pretty darn good job considering what they have to deal with. All three of my visits, I've received friendly service. Love this place, will be back for sure.

This place is awesome!!!! The pizza and deserts are amazing. If you ever get a chance to try the cheesesteak pizza jump on it, the best pizza I have ever had hands down. Highly recommend this place. The staff is super cool too. Good place to take a date.

First off as testiment to how good this pizza is I just made a Yelp account to write a review. The pizza here is the absolute real deal and I haven't even bought it with my own money yet . Our friends brought over 3 pizzas last Sunday to watch football (cheese, peperoni, and the special which is like a white pizza with garlic on top) . I will agree with everyone else that the signature surf rider pizza is unreal and you should try it out. The reason I like this pizza so much is that it reminds me of good pizza back east. It is hard to get the "like home" old school really kickass qualtiy pie. I am glad to see I am not alone with the love of this stuff and will be spending my own money tomorrow to treat my buddies to some awesome pizzza.

The barbecue chicken pizza is ridonkulous! I don't know what sort of deal these people made with the devil but they are producing some seriously good pizzas! Highly recommended!

Let me just tell you that ever since I left my hometown I have been craving this one pizza place up there... craving it! UNTIL NOWWWW!!!!!! Surf rider is actually even better than my once was favorite place in my hometown. The pizza always tastes beyond amazing... and I won't lie, I have a feeling im gonna need an intervention soon because I am addicted to and obsessed with the red velvet cupcakes!! not even just those cupcakes, but all of them! everything! I go to this place almost every day. I am sooooo happy it is just a block from my work, i'd starve otherwise.

Great little pizza place. Hope they get to serve beer someday .... and something healthier than just soda would be nice. If you are in the vicinity, definitely give it a try.

Passing through town on Monday and stopped based on Yelp reviews. Cute little place. Definitely has that college town feel and the guys there were very cool. Salad: Fresh and good quality. Pizza: Crust was thinner than I like and bit chewy. Sauce tasted like a cheap canned sauce. The slices are huge, so for $6 you get a quarter of a large pizza and a drink. Good deal. Deserts: Lemon bar was awesome. Carrot cookie was ok (but I had very high expectations). Thinking I should have tried the cream cheese brownie.

It was okay if you're starving and that's the closest easiest thing. We paid 14 for a cheese pizza that I could've taken out of a box and put in the oven for much cheaper. Didn't win my business and I wont be going back.

good pizza on the go. Two slices and a soda for 6 bucks. plus they make deserts and pastries which are pretty delicious. The make some doggie treats too, which my dog Hank enjoyed. Just a couple of tables inside and a small deck with stools outside.

finally a great pizza place in OB where the people who work there aren't douche bags. Best pizza in OB hands down. great slices, and we ordered a large pie that was half mushrooms, roasted garlic and peppers, and half pineapple and canadian bacon. IT was amazing. i highly recommend it.

This is the best pizza I have ever eaten in my life, no joke, I love this place! The surfrider signature pizza is shockingly full of flavor. OMG, the whole garlic cloves are insane!! And while you are waiting on you pizza enjoy a carrot cake cookie for $1...sooooooo good!

    (5)
  • D B.

I shared the signature Surf Rider pizza with one other person and we had some leftovers. It was definitely delicious, but it gave me the runs. Still worth it.

So I was pretty hungover today so to no suprise I was wanting a juicy burger or pizza. So glad I decided pizza! I yelped several places before I decided on surfrider. we ordered the signature and the first bite was a slice of garlic clove and at first I was like ugh because I wasn't use to that much flavor I kept eating it and wow this was THE most flavorful pizza ever! Im quite the carnivore so me saying this about this pizza is saying alot (has no meat). Also they have all sorts of sweets in a display case I had to get something. I got a carrot cake cookie for a buck. It was so soft and delicious.will definitely come back

this is some gooooooood pizza! it's a little pricier than your average pizza establishment, and you're average OB establishment, but it is GOOD!!! they also have cupcakes, added bonus!

    (5)
  • Joseph G.

Very, very good pizza by the slice (never had one made to order). The toppings are more inventive than your standard pizza place and the dough is lovely and chewy on top and crispy on the bottom. They have a very good deal of 2 (large) slices and a drink for $6. This is more than enough for one person.

    (4)
  • Jacob Y.

Pizza is just ok. Great looking cupcakes though and nice service.

    (3)
  • Lafe D.

Best pizza in Ocean Beach, period. We've eaten (from) there 5 times in the past month or so: authentic crust, great sauce, imaginative combos. And they are a bakery! The chocolate cupcakes are to live for. But there's a secret: meatballs. They make penne pasta with homemade sauce and incredible meatballs. ("It was my mother's recipe", one of the owners told us.) We asked them to double the meatballs on the next order. Great prices, great place, great service. Enjoy.

I wish i lived closer, but a drive from Santee to here for a slice is to far. Next time im at the beach im geting a slice

THIS PIZZA IS AWESOME! We've had a few beers but that only added to the experience. Regardless even if we hadn't been drinking IPAs it would have still been amazing. First time my vegetarian boyfriend and I wanted to order the same pizza...get the SURF RIDER. It has whole gloves of garlic fantasticness. NUF SAID.

I love pizza. And I love salty foods. But when my pizza tastes like salt, this is not a good thing. I'm guessing it was a one-time thing, but over-salting food is kind of a big mistake, and after tasting each item individually, my friend and I determined that the sauce received too much salt love. Serious salt love. It barely tasted like sauce, but sure did taste overwhelmingly like salt. Otherwise, everything was spot on: we ordered a Hawaiian and the ham, crust, cheese, and pineapple were all amazing--especially the crust, which is obviously important. Further, the guys behind the counter were really helpful, and although my pizza took a bit longer to make than specified, they were really friendly, personable, and overall chill dudes. Who loved salt too much. (Maybe the ocean air? I dunno....) I'm not going out of my way to come back, but if someone invites me for a slice, I hope that Surfrider will redeem its salt problem.

    (2)
  • Sarah P.

My husband is obsessed with NY style pizza, so naturally he was stoked to try Surfrider after Casanovas closed. If the owner makes your pie, it's great, but if you get anyone else, be prepared for a soggy middle. Gross. It's happened more times than we'd like and seeing as how a whole pie can be pricey, we'd rather walk a few more blocks to newport pizza where it has never happened. But the Surfrider pizza is really tasty when not soggy.

    (3)
  • nicole l.

Great local pizza joint with home-made desserts, great sandwiches, and good lunch specials. The only things I would change would be to have fewer ingredients on the salads (e.g., red peppers), but that's just a personal preference thing.

    (5)
  • Jocelyn L.

I had one of the best sandwiches of my life here. I ordered the smoked turkey with provolone, everything on it. The girl at the drive through soffee place on Voltaire and Bacon suggested that I get it with roasted garlic, which I did, and it was amazing. I don't know where they order their turkey from but it is some of the best deli meat I've ever had. Delicious, delicious sandwich.

  • Carrie O.

Yum, I'm DEFINITELY a fan of their original Surf Rider pizza! It is so delicious, you really need to try it if you haven't. The garlic is incredible! Yes, it's pretty rich, too. One slice will do ya. :) I love their $6 deal for two slices & a drink. I want to try their iced tea sometime! Nice location close to the beach. We brought our doggies, got two slices & split em at dog beach. Thanks, SurfRider!

    (4)
  • Daniel P.

I'm only here to give their sandwiches one star. I haven't had the pizza. The two different sandwiches I have eaten were absolutely terrible. The bread, meat, lettuce....It's just all bad. My stomach hurt for the rest of the day and I had to crash out for a while because the food made me feel so sick. That said, I don't know about the pizza. If it's anything like the sandwiches, run for the hills! Honestly though, I would take my business down the street to Newport pizza or Pizza Port because they both are solid pizza joints. Good luck!

    (1)
  • Scott G.

Great pizza! One size only and it's BIG. I guess this place is also a catering service, and you can tell - the side salads have roasted garlic - YUM. Don't be put off by the less than stellar location - it's really good!

    (4)
  • J E O.

cannot get enough of this place, the surf rider pizza and bbq chicken are some of the best pizza i have ever had. i cannot try the much recommended pizza port cuz im hooked on this pizza. want to try more things here but the pizza i've had is so good i want nothing but the 3 or 4 i've tried before. deserts look pretty good too, all i've tried is the carrot cake cookie sandwich which was very good, awesome idea, but needs more of the frosting in middle in my opinion and the brownie which was good, but lacked the chocolate taste that makes a brownie a brownie!

    (5)
  • Bakudai A.

Oh man, went in on saturday night after finding out the new 50/50 burger place had a 2 hour wait. Asked for their signature pizza, a philly cheesesteak, and a meatball sub. The guy with the pony-tail made a pretty dang good pizza, and the sandwiches were alright. Probably wouldn't get them again, but man, that pizza. Probably going to go in there tonight for a pepperoni mushroom. Also have to try those strombolis sometime.

    (5)
  • Chris C.

Pizza is one of my favorite things. I mean really, who doesn't enjoy pizza? I rue the day I meet the person that can with a straight face express some tragic flaw with pizza. That being said, there's plenty of average pizza in this world and that's enough. What OB needed was not average, what they needed was Surf Rider. The Signature Slice is incredible. Toasted garlic and tomato are really fresh and the gorgonzola just tips it over the edge. Great pizza, great dough, great flavor. Two slices and a drink for $6, and the slices aren't weak like some places. Rumor has it their beer and wine license is on the way and who doesn't want a tasty slice and a beer? If you're in OB and want to try a new spot, Surf Rider is the way to go. Skateboard parking, dog parking, all the luxury amenities.

    (5)
  • Dan M.

Great pie and Stromboli, far better than Pizza Port and at least on par with Newport Pizza IMO. You really need to improve the online menu so that non supermen can read it. Hit me up with help for that mascarimedia.com

  • Collin J.

We live about one block from here and I would eat here all the time if I could. Pizza by the slice is the way to go but the full calzones can feed you for a week. Sandwiches are good but not really special. Be sure to try the carrot cake cookies though - they are great.

    (4)
  • Sara Z.

This joint is another OB gem! Came for lunch for the 2 slices and soda for $6 deal! The slices are as big or bigger than a Costco slice, it was insane. YOU MUST get a slice of the "surfrider" the roasted garlic on that pizza might be considered life changing. As if you weren't stuffed from the pizza they are also a bakery with brownies and cupcakes, oh dang. I am sure we will be here again!

    (4)
  • Brian M.

Fantastic new york style pizza. Finally! The only downside is that they don't deliver yet. They need to get on that.

    (5)
  • Kathy G.

Loved this place! Dog friendly patio which is great since it's so close to the dog beach. Had one of their hot sandwiches and also had pizza. Their Surf Rider pizza is a must if you go!

  • Todd U.

Great pizza and stromboli! I like stopping in and getting one slice or going for an entire stromboli. The staff is very friendly and helpful as well; they always make you feel welcome. I also tried one of the carrot cake cookies in the front which was excellent. I am always a happy customer at Surfrider.

  • Nicole C.

The Surf Rider Signature Pizza was super delicious!! They also have super affordable and delicious desserts - cupcakes, cookies and other baked goods. The dude that helped us was super nice, the pizza was ready on time and their outside patio looks awesome (but I was already taking the pizza to go). Will be back soon!

    (4)
  • Tony C.

I was already gonna leave a good feedback but now its an excellent feedback. Pizza delayed so they offered us all one free item. Cupcake, salad, loaf, cookies or fruit salad. Excellent service and excellent delicious food. East coast pizza.

  • Melinda T.

Decent pizza for a good price. Interesting selection of desserts that I'll have to come back and try, including a marshmallow treat made with Cocoa Puffs. Couple tables inside for eating though mostly a grab and go kind of place. A little off the beaten path but good for a quick bite.

Actually better than I expected for a place that has the pizza by the slice.

MMMMM, they have the best meatball sandwiches!!! I frequent here and the service is always fast and friendly. I am happy to be a regular :)

Their signature Surf Rider Pizza is addicting! Really all the pizza I've tried here is as good as it gets. The whole selection of food is well rounded with a variety of baked goods and new treats every day... cheesecake brownies?! Amazing. On top of all that and the friendly atmosphere it's spitting distance from the beach.

Great pizza. My friend and I split a 16 dollar Hawaiian pizza after a long surf and were stuffed. I was iffy about the price at first, but the pizza's are generously sized.

Yes the pizza is good but it is another place that thinks it is ok to charge 18 bucks for a pizza. Milos in la mesa has a great NY style pizza for 10.

  • Josh B.

I don't know what happened after they changed over from cassanova's, but whatever it was is working for me. I get a weekly Italian hoagie there, and it's amazing. The pizza has also come leaps and bounds from what it use to be. I know we have quite a few pizza shops in ob, and this is by far the most underrated one out there. 99% hipster free.

  • Brianna F.

They have good deals. 2 slices and a soda for 6 bucks. the slices are big and all of the pizza is above average. staff is nice and they have tasty desserts!

Great food, reasonable prices. Two slices and a drink for $6; you can't beat it. I'm a huge fan of the Surf Rider Pizza. Roasted garlic, feta, and veggies = very tasty. My wife digs the desserts. We'll be back, for sure.

this is definitely the best pizza i have EVER had. i've had their signature pizza, a pear pizza, pepperoni and jalapeno. all of them are absolutely incredible! i don't even like to eat pizza anywhere else anymore. =D

Ok so I've been coming here a good amount of times for a quick lunch with coworkers since we all work in Point Loma... ever since Rachel's sister was raving about it the whole time on our flight from San Francisco to San Diego! Fellow eastcoaster might I add! Anyways, Rachel is awesome and treats her customers very well! I hosted a wine social yesterday and ordered 5 different varieties of their signature pizzas.. came in on Tuesday to place the order for pickup the following day at the same time.. Guy was super cool about me trying to use my 10% off card after I pre-paid.. Called the day of to confirm if it was ok for my cousin to pick them up since I had to tend to guests in downtown.. When he arrived, little miscommunication that the order was thought to be picked up Thursday vice Wednesday, but they did their best to crank them out.. My cousin said they felt super bad and my guests were getting a little cranky but it didn't matter when it finally came! Everyone raved about it! One of my guests said it was haunting him in his dreams last night it was so good.. I did a pretty good job explaining each pizza and what wine we had would go good with it (I know right? keeping it classy).. But anyways highly recommend!! My next wine social, I'll be sure to get desserts too! (because they are bomb*dot*com) Still beating myself not getting any to pair with my dessert wines..

My family was vacationing nearby and discovered this place...we highly recommend the Surfrider Pizza on the menu. My husband was addicted, and we had to have this pizza the last 3 nights we stayed! Very good pizza, really nice staff, great baked goodies, too! They even let you bring your dogs into the outside eating area. We just loved this place!

  • Jill N.

Excellent pizza - the dough is perfect (sauce is a little bland, but some people like it like that!), great specialty pies and customer service was great. The desserts are terrific for a pizza joint and a great selection. The salads looks fresh and yummy too! I will definitely be coming back. Only flaw is the lack of alcohol.

  • Michael H.

signature pie is the best. really friendly service. you cant beat 2 slices and a soda for $6. its tough to find great pizza around San Diego. Been here twice and will be back, still dying to try some of the baked goods!

  • James C.

Best pizza in OB. By the slice, as well. Roasted garlic is their signature. You will likely find cloves of it on multiple slices in their display case.

  • Consumer A.

Surfrider Pizza is a precious GEM - The best Pizzas, pastas, stromboli's, deserts in Ocean Beach!! (& probably all of San Diego... I know good foods as I travel often & am a culinary semi-pro) Quality + Quantity... it's rare you get both, but Surfrider serves up well! Pizzas are loaded with fresh ingredients - order a whole one or get their 2 slices (large slices) + beverage for $6.50. Stromboli's are huge and stuffed full of cheeses and various goodies. The cheese-sticks are topped with melted, gooey cheese and served with a dipping sauce. Even if you're full, you MUST try their desserts!...homemade and scrumptious!!!!!!! Customer Service and Courtesy is professional and friendly (which is lacking at many OB establishments). The outside patio accommodates your furry friends. No, they don't deliver but why would anyone want soggy pizza delivery - just walk on over to Surfrider and enjoy the great OB neighborhood ambiance :)

Surf Rider pizza has really quality food! I'm originally from St. Louis and had yet to find pizza that could compare to the pie I was used to but Surf Rider delivers! I also love their Surf Rider salad with roasted garlic, fresh basil and Parmesan. They have a rosemary Dijon dressing that is amazing. The owners are super nice and the place has a very friendly atmosphere. I love that it is dog friendly too! Best pizza I've had since moving to Cali! I'll definitely be a regular here.

Great pizza, good deals on single slices, and good sandwiches. I used to come here when in was cassanova's and although I was hesitant, I'm definately digging Surfrider. The people are nice, and they always have the pizza ready for pickup within 20 minutes. Great addition to OB.

    (5)
  • Danielle R.

Can I say I'm so glad they moved into this side of OB! I live across the street and have gone in several times. The owners are great and friendly-. They painted the place and cleaned it up, and have way more options than Casanovas did. The pizza is always good and fresh. They have great vegetarian options. The surf rider veggie is amazing! Its a party in your mouth!. Also they have amazing coffee. You can tell they care about what they do and are passionate. Pizza in OB doesn't get better than this!

Awesome East Coast thin crust pizza! Not perfect, but really good. Could of used more sauce, less salt and it would be so close to perfect. It was my first visit, but will definitely try it again. Not only was the pizza great, the owner was so nice. Really is a pleasure to patronize a place when you feel like your business is appreciated. Can't wait to go back.

This was good enough to inspire me to write my first review on yelp. Surfrider occupies the space that was previously Casanova's. Casanova's pizza was terrible, and I suspect that Surfrider has been handicapped by their legacy. I hope this isn't the case, because Surfrider makes terrific pizza, and they're a great presence in the neighborhood. As a resident of OB, I have to admit that I was shocked to find something this good walking distance from my place. Their pizza is well-balanced: The crust is crispy and chewy at the same time, and it is not tough. They use quality ingredients in their toppings, and speciality pizzas are especially good. I really loved the Surf Rider Pizza, which is topped with "Roasted garlic, olive oil, parmesan, gorgonzola, tomatoes, and fresh basil". You can taste all of these, and the roasted garlic is delicious - they roast whole cloves of garlic until it's soft and sweet. To top it all off, the people are friendly, and they're only two blocks from the beach!

    (5)
  • Angie Pants E.

Pizza was definitely good. The cheese steaks are awful. Even if you do NOT compare it to an east coast cheese steak (or the ones from Philadelphia where I lived for 25 of my 27 adult years) it is still the worst. It was like a cheese steak that some one chewed up, spit out, and added green peppers to (even though the menu says they don't). They should not claim "EC" so hard until they make better ones. Go to Jin's on Midway for that. Pizza 4 stars, cheese steak 0.

I live nearby but had never been here. Was looking for a bite too eat and Yelp to the rescue! Pizza was sooo good. On my last day of vacation back from Italy-yes I ate pizza there too...this place knocked my socks off. I ordered a salad too and didn't dig it too much. The dressing was weird. But the pizza-yum yum yum. Walked over to the beach and had myself a lovely garlicky pizza slice by the water. Perfect way to wrap up my last vacation of the year. Will definitely come back. I'm in!

Decent pizza, to much cheese for my liking though. Used a living social deal. We'll probably not go back because of the drive.

We came from out of town to spend some time at the beach. We ended up deciding to stay all day, but didn't bring any lunch with us. I looked at Yelp and saw that this pizza place was within walking distance of where we were on Ocean Beach. My husband and son went and picked up 2 pizzas. Pepperoni and Barbeque Chicken. Yum! It was delicious! Crust was good, sauce, cheese, everything was perfect! The barbeque chicken had an especially good flavor, it wins hands down as my favorite BBQ chicken pizza. My husband said the employees were very friendly, they made sure to give us lots of napkins, paper plates and utensils. Next time we are in San Diego, we will make it a point to stop here again!

The pizza is really good and you cant beat 2 slices and a soda for $6 and that deal is all day. My boyfriend and i ordered a lot of food but we snacked on the food the next day as well. We shared a slice of BBQ chicken and a chicken with white sauce. Both were good. We also ordered the Mediterranean salad that was very fresh and tasty. We had a garlic chicken sandwich. It was very oily butstill good. The bread was delicious but it was a little bland. I think onions and tomatoes would have been good in it. They sell desserts and i just had toget a cheesecake brownie but I was disappointed. I had a 10% off coupon. My bill withthe discount was $21. Pretty good deal for all that food. They have a outdoor patio which is nice to sit in especially when the sun is going down. There were a few guys working in the restaurant when I was there. The guy that helped me at first who ended up making my sandwich was very friendly bit the other two guys not so much.

  • Sabrina C.

I LOVE surfrider pizza! Excellent pizzas--truly gorgeous toppings and outside-the-box selection. Their pastas are pretty tasty, but a bit oily for my taste. Exceptionally friendly staff. If you call ahead for pick-up, there's really very little wait time. Yes, I do wish they delivered, but whatever keeps the costs down isn't so bad :) As for desserts, I've only ever tried their Carrot Cake Cookies (like an Oatmeal Pie cookie, but carrot cake and cream cheese frosting) because every time I go, I can't resist getting another one. They are genius! The other desserts (cream cheese brownie, cupcakes, etc) look delicious, but I just can't resist those carrot cake cookies!

Shout out for a great cheesesteak cooked by a West Chester gal! We've been eating the pizza for two years and ventured in to sandwiches today. The hubby and I split a cheesesteak sub and an Italian hoagie--both were great! Being the gluttons we are, we got a pizza to go for dinner. They have the best crust--truly east coast style! I think I know what I'm having for lunch tomorrow and I am NOT splitting it with the hub! Located so close to Dog Beach and has a pet friendly patio. Service was amazing including bringing water bowls for our four-legged furry kids. Reading the other reviews I realize I've got to try the roasted garlic, salad and cupcakes--not necessarily in that order. No need to go any where near Newport for the best food in OB!

very consistent. sometimes newport pizza will make certain pizzas better than usual. i went in for a slice and the guy picked out the one with the most pepperonis and then picked out the biggest carrot cake cookie. great neighborhood cafe.

  • Lyndsi W.

I love their toppings, the white sauce and their specialty combos but I find this pizza kinda dry! I think next time asking for extra sauce is a good idea. I love how the crust is crispy and chewy and the slice stands straight out like pizza should! They ingredients are super fresh tasting other than the bacon seemed the be just like the Horner bacon bits I buy at the store, not good. They also have some desserts that are homemade and those were decent.

  • Whitney M.

I love eating here! The pizza is delicious and the pastries are addicting! I highly recommend their buffalo chicken pizza & cheesecake brownie for dessert! The guys that work there are super nice too!

These guys are spot on. Great selection, the Italian stromboli and bar'b'q chicken pizza are my faves. They provide a great selection of salads and sweets, also locally made dog treats and coffee beans. I always appreciate a dog friendly restaurant who helps support other local venders, just all around good vibes.

myPley: As if OB could not get any better, Surfrider Pizza makes OB even more fascinating. A small shop located only a few blocks west of OB pier, stands undisputedly the top 3 pound for pound thin crust pizza in San Diego. I ordered the signature Surfrider pizza, Roasted Chicken BBQ pizza, German chocolate cupcake, and an organic blood orange tea. Fucking score! Their Chicken BBQ pizza sets the bar high in San Diego. When Pizza meets BBQ, or to be politically correct, when Dixie meets Italy, I am quite confident this is what it's supposed to feel, look, and taste like: fabulous! The Signature Surfrider is not your average, status quo, tedious, nonsensational thin crust pizza; Cooked fresh with garlic, white sauce, Gorgonzola, basil, and tomatoes, every ingredient turns on your mouth sprinklers including the crispy and flavorful crust. I mean, vampires could eat the garlic on this pizza without even wincing, and the sauce would become a source where their fangs can suck life from. It's that good. I mean, A lactose intolerant person would shove this pizza down, and declare that the Gorgonzola was worth every difficult hour in the laboratory. It's that damn good. I mean, a professional certified Paleo-dietitian would be found laying in his house with a slice of pizza in his hands, eyes rolled back, 27 empty Boxes of 18 inch Surfrider pizza on his table, and suffering from a lethal tummy ache and chronic pizza consumption. It's that freaking good, and if I omitted to mention, the pizza works magic in your mouth. The German chocolate cupcake made the day a bit more sweet, and the organic blood orange tea refreshed it. I cannot forget about the kind and lovely service. The people who work here are polite and I thought I'd tell on them.

We went today based on yelp reviews and we're underwhelmed. I had a Greek salad with iceberg lettuce that was blah. The rest of my family had pizza, and while it tasted good they both had HUGE stomach aches after. Not worth the aftermath.

Great food, great employees, great vibe! This place is great for OB! Never ordered something that I did not like! Pastas, sandwiches and obviously the pizza! Surf Rider Special and the Buffalo Chicken are up there as the best slices I've ever had in my life. This is my favorite OB pizza shop HANDS DOWN! Always bring out of towners in for cupcakes or one of their other 20 baked goods that are all made on location! Thanks!

I tried Surf Rider for the first time last night, even though I live just around the corner. Why? Because, I am a loyal Newport Pizza fan, and use them for all my pizza needs. However, last night it was freezing and I didn't feel like walking aaaallllll the way to Newport Pizza. So, Surf Rider it was! Best decision ever. I got the Signature Surf Rider pie ($18.00). Toppings include gorgonzola, white sauce, tomatoes, fresh basil, and roasted garlic. It is truly a work of art. Really, really delicious. The crust was amazing - crisp yet chewy, perfect. The inside is bright and clean, with a small seating area, with more seating on the patio. There are a few bottled sodas/other cold beverages available, along with salads, sandwiches, and sweets from a bakery whose name escapes me. The staff was friendly. I still hold Newport Pizza very close to my heart - but, for those days when I don't feel like getting a beer, or don't want to walk all the way to Newport, or want toppings on my pizza (I always get plain cheese at Newport), I will be at Surf Rider. I can't wait to go back!

Pretty solid NY style pizza. I'm pretty simple so the pepperoni always hits the spot. My favorite part is the short walk from my apartment. And dessert. I love the desserts. Especially the carrot cake cup thingies.

  • Kelli T.

We LOVE Surfrider Pizza! Aside from its convenient location close to our pad, the pizza is consistently delicious and the staff always friendly. I love that they are so willing to modify the pizzas 1/2 in 1/2 as my husband and I have very different tastes. The prices are very reasonable for the size of the pizza and the amount of toppings on it. We will continue to come here. Thanks Surfrider!!

    (5)
  • Lorna S.

They have amazing food and friendly costumer service. The pizza is yummy. I have yet to try their pastries, but if it's anything like the pizza, then you are in for a treat. Ocean Beach's little hidden secret with affordable prices. In closing, NOM NOM NOM!

    (4)
  • Chris L.

Meh. Not much to say. It's just edible, NY style pizza. Ordered a pie with sausage and pepperoni. It was a slow afternoon so when the pizza was undercooked (as white as raw dough), I felt there wasn't an excuse. I brought it home and we put slices on my pizza stone to salvage some crispiness. But even after that, the taste was just bland. Couldn't pinpoint where they feel short but I think the crust should have gotten a dressing of olive oil before adding the sauce and toppings. They do have decent deserts which was a plus. You don't find that at other pizza joints like this. If I don't feel like driving up to Hillcrest for Bronx Pizza or Luigi's in North Park... I might consider giving it another shot, but they definitely came up short the first time around.

I had the BEST Italian sub sandwich here a week ago. I can't remember having a better one anywhere - ever! The bun was perfect! The sandwich was full of ingredients, no cheating on the ingredients here. The flavor was fantastic. I'd give it 10 stars if they let me.

  • Hannah N.

Surf riders pizza is the best pizza in Ocean Beach. My husband and I eat pizza at least once a week and we have found nothing that compares. We get two slices of surf riders and two basil tomatoes and a carrot cake whoopie pie. The employees are great, dog friendly, and it all taste so fresh. Love the owner, love the pizza.

  • Adam T.

One of the premiere pizza spots in San Diego for sure. Their signature pizza is amazing. It is topped with gorgonzola, tons of roasted garlic, white sauce, and basil. It is a bit heavy and I think they pour olive oil on it to really make you feel like a scum bag for eating pizza but it is still really good. Honestly I have had the signature about 10 times now and I am a little burnt out on it now. Next time I am going to go for something a little more simple. Another nice thing about this place is the staff. They are always friendly and glad you came by. You know how at some places you feel like you ruined someones day by coming in (maybe its just me), not at Surfrider.

  • Haamid D.

Great pizza!! Their surfrider slice is a must have. Really great prices and decent service. If I lived here, I'd be a regular.

Great little spot had the veggie sandwich which was great they import their bread from Philly for some reason but it was good they have an assortment of unique tea. They also seem to have a full bakery too nice place.

another ocean beach gem. super fun but mellow atmosphere, great selections by the slice. the pesto ricotta is always amazing, with the surfrider slice coming in at a strong second. great outdoor seating to watch the sun go down and people watch. staff is consistently cool and friendly.

Surf Rider Pizza Cafe is one of those special spots that serves inexpensive food that seems like it should cost more. The New York style pizza has a wonderful crispy crust that isn't overcooked, and the toppings and cheese are high-quality! My favorite is the signature Surf Rider pizza that is like a traditional Margherita pizza with whole roasted garlic and bits of blue cheese. Other good pizzas include the BBQ Chicken and the Veggie Pesto. In addition, they frequently experiment with toppings to make unusual pizzas. The various salads are also tasty. I was surprised to find that they make all of their own desserts and use all-natural ingredients. Make sure you try their home-made coconut macaroons dipped in chocolate as they are out of this world! With a friendly staff and awesome food at good prices, this place has become a regular stop for my friends and I.

    (5)
  • Shannon B.

YUM!!!! I LOVE Surfrider Pizza! Their pizza is perfectly thin and floppy - just how it's supposed to be! I think the menu they offer is great. They have standard options as well as some fun ones and also do the stromboli's. In all honesty, I feel that their pizza is better quality then that of Newport Pizza (gasp, I know) and the staff are SO much friendlier. Oh, their salads are good too! The roasted garlic on the greek salad is to die for.

  • Thomas A.

I have no clue how this place has 140 reviews and 4 and half stars. This pizza was boring in taste and I had 4 slices: bbq, pepperoni, pineapple and ham and something else. I didn't even want to finish them. I love the pizza in Rhode Island and this was a pizza by the slice that lacked any WOW flavor. I would not go to this place again and when I asked my friend who was a local he said the same thing. There is another pizza spot in OB I believe called Pizza Port, I highly recommend that place over this one, but you can always be the judge of that.

    (2)
  • Janey J.

Oh how I love this place! My favorite is the signature surf rider pizza with roasted garlic, Gorgonzola & tomatoes will rock your world. The crust is thin and almost crispy but still chewy. Equally delicious is the Bbq chicken pizza. As a Bbq chicken pizza connoisseur, I very much appreciated how evenly distributed all of the ingredients were and how all items were sliced into small pieces. You get all ingredients into one tasty bite! That's pizza heaven. Finally, they have such good baked treats! I had the chocolate chip cookies sandwiched with ganache. That was worth the calories for sure!

I could have sworn I wrote a review for this place, apparently not. ANYwho, wow, what a gem. The gf and I were in San Diego on vacation when we were going to meet up with some friends that live in the area, for dinner. We didn't know where to go but found this place using the mobile app and I'm happy we did. Don't let the outside of this place fool you. Walking up, the other couple were a little hesitant with eating here because it doesn't look the nicest necessarily but once we got in and saw the pizza, we knew they meant business. Once ordered and eating, everyone was very very happy. Great service, pizza was delicious, crust was great. We will definitely be back!

wow, what's with all the high ratings? I suppose as an OBtian, if you call the urine soaked sidewalks, screaming sirens, criminally noisy motorcycles waking you up in the wee hours of the night, ambulance sirens, "home", then maybe this place is something to get excited about. But, c'mon! The pizza is at best OK, the slices small, and downright lame at a whopping $3 a slice. The interior is pretty run down, much like the area of the neighborhood it's located in. I may sound stuck up, but I just don't see how this place deserves a nearly 5 star ratings, which really got my hopes up. :( .

The people here are so incredibly friendly! The have awesome organic unsweetened iced tea. Only visiting the area but would definitely come back again. The food was incredible as well! Had the white pizza and added meatballs and pesto. YUM!

  • Courtney Y.

East coast style, so thin crusts all a-ROUND. We tried a slice of the White Spinach Tomato & a slice of the Chicken w/ Roasted Red Pepper + Gorgonzola Pesto. If you're in a veggie mood these were great picks. Not too heavy, but delicious! Staff was super friendly & helpful. Came on a Monday afternoon so there was lots of street parking & seating both indoors + outside. Order & seat yourself type of joint. Definitely a hidden gem in the neighborhood away from the tourist zones down the road. P.S. They have a good selection of baked desserts as well. The carrot cake whoopee pie was AMAZING. Get it.

Living Social coupon . I hate to say anything really bad, but there was nothing really positive I can say about the food. This is one time I totally disagree with the reviewers. We got the favorite, the Surf Rider, and also a meatball stromboli. We forced ourselves to eat a piece of each (I will give them a point for the generous size of each) but then had to trash it. I am not one to put food in the trash, but this was seriously horrible. The meatball stuffing was the most edible of everything. Even the dipping marinara for the stromboli was bitter, overcooked, over spiced. Very disappointing. And seating and parking are also a real challenge. Too close to the beach, had to drive around and around like a shark for quite some time. And Surfriders is a tiny place. Very limited seating inside, and their "patio" is capable of handling about 9 people, squeezed together. I don't like to be squeezed. Upside, you can do some serious people watching. I can say one good thing and add one more point. The guy at the counter was absolutely wonderful and so patient. Even did not charge us for our drinks. So, chalk that one off my list.

SurfRider Pizza Cafe is the real deal!!! I grew up on the East coast eating awesome pizza and this is by far the just as good, if not better. No freaking kidding!! They have a great selection of cheese and specialty pies and you can get slices also. They are BIG slices too, not these little one you get at other places. I think its an 18" Pizza Pie. The crust is over the top. Not that doughy stuff at other pizza joints. The Beer and wine selection was above average also. I didn't have any of the Subs, but there is a nice selection on the menu. And leave plenty of room for desert. They have a great selection of cupcakes, brownies, cookies, cheesecake, lemon bars and other great sweets. Who thought you could get great deserts at a Pizza Place! This is a great neighborhood Pizza place that I highly recommend. I hope they start delivering soon. I would have Surfrider on speed dial!!!

So glad we tourists took a stab at a local spot. Great food and better service, friendliness and working with my wife's allergy to onion (which can be pretty difficult to work with, obviously). We probably won't exactly be in San Diego often, but I'm sure we'll always be back whenever we are. And we didn't even try the fabulous-looking bakery items.

  • Kurt A.

Yum. Super chill neighborhood... Zero pretension. Had the OB deluxe (pepperoni, sausage, onion, tomato) which was good but not compared to the artichoke heart with red peppers and pesto... Such thin crust that was beautifully crispy. We also had the Meatball sub which was good though the marinara was a little too raw- tomatoish for me. They bake their own cupcakes, macaroons, brownies, bars and whoopie pies. I imagine they're good because the crust was excellent and a good baker is a good baker! Couldn't beat the price of two slices and a drink for $6.50

Awesome pizza, very thin crust with the right balance of chewy and crispy. My favorite is the surf rider special (truly outstanding with whole cloves of sweet roasted garlic and an unusual blend of different cheeses) and the bbq chicken. Minus one star for the desserts; aside from the lemon bars and the carrot cake whoopie pie, which are tasty, the rest are bland and uninteresting.

Wow, Surfrider definitely made the list of one of the top pizzas I've ever had. We went to OB intending on going to South Beach for taco Tuesdays, but after having a minor with us, we ended up heading over to Surfrider. Best decision ever, and probably a hell of a lot better than South Beach (who doesn't let minors in for just dinner anyways!). Anyways, you won't be a fan of Surfrider if: - you don't like gorgonzola (aka strong cheese)- it's pretty much all over all of their pizzas - you don't like whole cloves of roasted garlic - you're on a date and don't want stinky cheesy, garlicky breath - you don't like delicious thin crust Otherwise, enjoy! The pizzas are huge. A normal person probably can eat 1.5 slices, so don't get fooled into thinking this is some Domino's pizza where you can eat half the pie. And the service is low-key and friendly. They genuinely want to see you enjoy the food. It'd be awesome if they served alcohol... beer would be a good complement to the pizza and make people want to stay. We came on a week night and most people just came in for take-out.

The stars are for the food, NOT for the service. I came here last night with friends and we ordered the Signature Surfrider Pizza, a small salad, and 2 carrot cookies and one carrot cupcake. Since the pizza takes some time, we snacked on the salad and treats and let me tel you, that roasted garlic was amaaaaaaazing on the salad. The carrot cookies and cupcakes were moist and delicious, I was sold and we hadn't even had the pizza yet! I'm very very sad about the service. We arrived a little after 8,and when one of my dining companions asked 45 minutes later about our pizza, it turns out it had been sitting on top of the oven for who knows how long...apparently there was confusion because the gentleman who took our order was off work shortly afterward so our pizza was somehow lost in the shuffle. The pizza itself, was amazing. soft and tender roasted garlic, savory gorgonzola, fresh basil, nice thin crust...the pizza was AWESOME. I bet it would have been even better piping hot, and not warmish like it was served after being forgotten. Poor, poor forgotten pizza... SOooo yeah. Food was amazing! Our meal and treats were top notch and I'll be back for those, definitely. I'm sad about the service, but hoping it was a rare occurrence and an off night more than the norm. I'll probably call in my pizza order ahead fo time though, those delicious pies take some time to make!

I drool over this pizza and wish I was back in OB for it frequently. Having been to OB several times and walking by Surfrider on the morning walk, I knew I was going to eat it for dinner that evening. I bought a large pizza thinking it would fulfill our "Everything's Bigger in Texas" appetites after driving for 22 hours. When I picked up the pizza I just about died. How were three people going to finish that pizza for dinner?! The answer is, we didn't! We all ate one slice that night and asked our hotel for ziploc bags. We ended up eating that pizza all week long during our California road trip. And in case you're wondering, the pizza tastes really good reheated too!

I can only review the service as I did not eat the pizza since I am a vegan. We called ahead placed an order for 10 pizzas to be picked up at a designated time. When we arrived we had to wait about 15 minutes. We were told that the last one was in the oven. I would have liked to have been told up front that the restaurant had a small oven and that was the reason for the delay. When we waited we of course thought it was due to poor planning from the staff. While we waited we were offered complmentary beverages and the staff was apologetic. We took 10 pizzas to a summer camp and the kids said things like: "Mmmmm mmmmmm mmm...m mm" and "I really like thi..mmmm mmmm mmmm" My son had a remaining slice for dinner and was very satisfied. Be aware that Surfrider only has one size - Large 18 inch pizza.

OB is filled with great pizza places so it is hard to choose which one to go too when I am craving pizza. Surfrider is at the end of my street, so it is usually my go too pizza place when I have a craving. I like that you can get slices there and they are always super friendly and accommodating. Their pizzas are HUGE, so if you decide to commit to it make sure that you have a friend or two to share it with. Enjoy!

I ended up at this 'joint' after reading the yelp reviews. Being from the New Haven/NYC area, I'm pretty picky with my pizza and I have to say this pizza can hang with the best of them. I agree with others the crust is great. It wasn't the least bit soggy or greasy. I ordered whatever their special pizza was. As a side note, I went here thinking it would be a nice sit down and get served type of place. It's not. There's a few tables and its self seating.

Have you ever been to Disneyland when it opens and rode all the rides with no wait and had no problem exploring the park? That's how Surf Rider Pizza makes me feel because it's not too busy but super good. It's a foodie secret you don't want to let out, but once word gets around about their signature pizza it's going to go crazy like Best Buy on Black Friday. The whole garlic cloves on it makes it unbelievable. I also don't normally do reheated pizza but duuudde, the signature pizza is good cold. Not too keen on their cupcakes though at $3, with Azucar a half mile away, let's stick to your niche Surf Rider.

Amazing pizza, and great staff!! And the dessert was great too! We'll definitely go back during our vacation!

I can't wait to go back! The pizza was sooo gooddd. And we took some macaroons home with us, which were also very goooood. The staff is incredibly friendly & made us feel so welcome. Great sense of humor too. We left a nice tip in the jar :) Just keep in mind that this place is super casual & small! I'm sure it gets busy on the weekends so you may wanna save this one for a weeknight.

My hubby says I'm too old to describe things as "the bomb," but I'm sorry....this pizza is THE BOMB! I was having a bad moment so I ordered 3 slices (yes, I ate them all, and yes, I felt very happy afterwards). I had the garlic with gorgonzola cheese, pepperoni with jalapenos and the last one had peppers, olives and sausage. They were all delicious and had a nice crispy crust, even on the bottom. There were tons of freshly baked treats to choose from, so we tried the carrot cake cookies that have the cream cheese filling. Perfect way to end a meal! Can't wait to go back!

$6 for two slices of pizza with a drink! Good delicious pizza that is inexpensive. For the win! I would definitely come back here again and would recommend this place to family and friends!

Wow. Casanova's Pizza was there one day, and the next day it was gone. Thank gawd! Surf Rider''s pizza is many slices beyond Casanova's, which I tried once and never went back. And I live right around the corner. I used to lament, how can a pizza place be within spittin' distance and suck? Well, don't have to worry anymore. Their signature pizza, roasted garlic, olive oil, parmesan, gorgonzola, tomatoes, and fresh basil is totally scrumptious AND they made the pizza extra crispy when I asked for it. I also got a slice of their pepperoni and mushroom which was good, but I prefer their signature one so far. I'll have to try others. Slices for $2 and up. Their menu also boasts strombolis, salads, hoagies (hope their bread is good and crunchy, it's gonna be hard to beat Pomas} and other hot sammies like cheesesteaks, Italian Sausage, meatballs, chicken and garlic, etc. Their desserts are also homemade by Rachel, one of the owners. Amazing looking cream cheese brownies, banana bread, red velvet cupcakes, triple chocolate cupcakes, and more. I ordered the Lemon Coconut Crunch Cupcake. Frosting was good, thought the cake was not moist enough. Looking forward to trying the others. I met two of the four owners, Scott and Shae, and they were super friendly. Now I don't have to plot my escape to Bronx Pizza in Hillcrest unless I'm in the area...I've got rockin' pizza right around the corner! You also can't beat watching the OB sunset from their front window, beautiful. Even though this is off the beaten path of downtown OB, namely Newport Ave, this should be a destination just like Bronx Pizza is for most. Even Scott says he loves Bronx Pizza, so he knows good pizza and makes it himself!

We get the Signature Surf Rider Pizza--roasted garlic, gorgonzola, diced tomatoes, and basil--and we usually add spinach to it for some extra umph! We were also delightfully surprised with their cheesesteak sandwich. It almost has a stroganoff flavour to it--I love it!! I've yet to try their pastries, but they look pretty good!

First time here &it was muy delish! The crust is buttery and perfect. Got a slice of tomato, pesto basil to go. Heaven in a slice.

With a little push from the yelp deal, I decided to finally try this place and I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed the pizza, it's not my favorite in town but it was still good. The staff was friendly and sitting on the patio down in the war zone is always entertaining. I think I'll go back and try out the sandwiches or may be their signature pizzas by the slice.

This is our go to restaurant in OB. The slices are huge and I love their white pizza with the huge chunks of garlic. The staff is really nice and always gives my Toddler stickers when we go to visit. My picky little boy always requests to eat here when we visit the area too!

We were in San Diego for my stepson's Marine Corps boot camp graduation and had rented a house in the Ocean Beach area. Thanks to Yelp, we found this place close to our house and called in an order for four large pizzas. Luckily, despite the out of state cell number calling late, they did not disregard it as a joke (especially when they thought I said my name was Randy Newman....I wouldn't have even bothered if someone told me he was Randy Newman). They made some great pizza, substitutions made on at least three of them and the cream cheese brownies were great!! Everyone in our party loved them and even had leftovers the next morning heated up in the microwave. Friendly folks, quick service, you gotta love this place!! The only drawback is the price.....$18 each, but they are 18 inch pies, so not really a bad deal for GREAT pizza!

  • Ann H.

Freaking awesome pie and freaking awesome desserts! The guys who work here are super chill and make yummy pizza. Had carrot cake cookie whoopee pie for dessert....yum yum yum! I usually stick to a cheese pizza...and just so you know....pizza is my absolute favorite food, its.... last meal kinda love. Surfrider throws it down! This is some good pizza!

  • Nuvia C.

My absolute favorite place for unique pizzas. Hands down their Buffalo Chicken Pizza is the BEST! Once you have it you'll be hooked. After a day at the beach walk over and have a slice or two of this great pizza. Enjoy.

  • Kristen R.

Yay! New options and more meat. Their desserts=best and worst discovery ever. Once you try the carry cake cookie it's game over.

Looking for a quick slice or a whole pie? Skip Newport Pizza if you can and hit surfrider instead! Pizza is much better taste wise and comparable in crust/price. I'd compare to Pizza Port but they are 2 totally different pizza types. I dig Surfrider now.. everything is fresh and they season with oregano/garlic (I think) before they bake the pie!

The only thing I regret coming here is forgetting to ask for the name of the gentlemen who helped me out during closing time. He was extremely humble and had the friendliest vibe. This is exactly what makes a restaurant complete and makes me want to come back, great people, great food. The pizza here is phenomenal, the crust is perfect if you like a bit of crunch. It is not overly greasy nor salty but it is everything gourmet. Their bbq chicken is the first I've tried with Gorgonzola cheese and it's definitely a great topping on this flavorful pizza. He also pointed out that the buffalo chicken wing pizza was his favorite so I said, hey why not give it a try! I must say I'm a total fan of this one too especially the zesty and spicy highlights. Seriously, whatever is your slice of pie, you won't be disappointed if you get it here. Plus, the guys here bring on a total mom and pop feel like they'll take care of you which I really dig and would much rather eat here then the pizza shop down the street but that's just my opinion ;) These guys win hearts & stomachs !

Whenever I come for pizza in OB, I always go to Pizza Port, but this past weekend, I decided to switch it up. I called in an order for pick up. The place is pretty small, and located right on the corner. Totally perfect for a quick slice after a nice day at the beach! My pie consisted of: olives, mushrooms, artichoke hearts, chicken, basil, tomato, and sausage. The total was $30 and some change- which I was surprised at. Looking at their menu online- each topping is $1.95-$2.50 each, which is pretty pricey. The pizza was definitely good! I enjoyed it and gobbled up 3 slices. I liked the thinner crust and the taste of the sauce. I'd definitely be ordering here again, but will probably do one of their signature pizzas and not try and get all cray-cray with my toppings lol.

  • Ben A.

Ordered 2 pizzas for takeout. They were some of the best pizzas I have had. Service was mixed. It took a good 10 minutes before they acknowledged us at the counter, but once they did they were extremely helpful and friendly. I will eat here again.

  • Emily B.

This pizza was awesome! It had been a long day of playing tourists, so we ordered two pizzas to go (along with two beers to keep us occupied during the wait for our food). I loved that the beer list was displayed above the registers so we could have our order ready when it was our turn! We found two seats at the bar area to wait in the fairly crowded seating area and it took about 15 minutes for them to tell us our pizzas were ready. When we got home, we were pleasantly surprised by our food. Crispy, not greasy, and the perfect balance of cheese, sauce, and toppings. If we ever come back to Ocean Beach, we'll be stopping in for sure!

Great pies . Very fresh ingredients . Nice selection of " slices". They have a great 2 slice & a drink (soda or beer -- nice!)special includes many "specialty pie " options --- great value ! Loved my surf rider & ricotta spinach but hubby's BBQ chicken slice gave me "pizza envy". Must return soon

The staff start it right. Great service at the counter. It's a place with limited seating but worth it. To name some of the flavors this place makes. Buffalo chicken. Inside out Hawaiian. BBQ chicken. Ricotta cheese roasted garlic on a white pizza. All this in a small corner stop near ocean beach. The crust was crunchy and then chewy towards the end. The slices were big enough to fold as to eat. NY style. As an added bonus they have a wide range of desserts. S'mores whoopi pie. Homemade marshmallow and home made chocolate. Lemon bars carrot cake cupcakes all look delish. I had the lemon bar and oh my gosh. Love this place a definite return visit is called for.

This was our first time as we typically do not stray from Mission Beach. However, Yelp ratings never lead us astray. Great pizza and great beer. The setting is casual but the food and beer are great. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a local joint.

Love the smell as soon as you walk in the door. It's on the thin crust side but it's good just the same. Can't miss pizza place in the OB.

  • Ana D.

Yummy! Two slices and a beer for 10 bucks! It's a thin crust pizza with a little crunch to it. My favorite is the garlic, tomato, basil toppings one! They have a nice selection of craft beers and gourmet desserts here that I always take home for later. I have tried most of their desserts. The lemon tarts and red velvet cookie sandwiches are my favorite. They have a patio with bar type seating. I love hanging out here after taking my dog to the dog beach! Dogs are welcome on the patio. It's a great little spot, hidden in the beach houses. I found it when walking my dog. I have been here numerous times now! The customer service is always a pleasant experience. They're very laid back here.

Pizza was great and reasonably priced. But they need to staff up because this place is getting busy so service is slow. I called in an order for 2 pizzas and was told to pick it up in 25-30 minutes. But then had to stand in line for 15 minutes behind people ordering food to eat in to pick it up.

This place is a MUST TRY! Their pizzas are thin crust and they usually have about 8 different ones to choose from. I usually come here on my lunch break and have the plain cheese since I am not a fan of topics :-) However, I have tried their specialty pizza as well as a couple others and they are all really good! If pizza is not enough for you and you have a sweet tooth, you must try their coconut bar.. It is pretty delicious! Don't feel like coconut bar, no problem, they also have cakes, cupcakes, cookies, brownies, and other goodies for you to try!

Came here when girls were playing in a beach tournament to get foid. 2 slices and a drink for 6.95 is good. Pizza was good, not great. They warm it up by the slice and a piece wasn't completely hot, but it was good.

  • Bridget A.

My hubby and I discovered this gem on Yelp. Since it was close and it got awesome reviews, well why not? We were not disappointed. Their pizza was crispy on the bottom and crust yet chewy and cheesy on top. I tried their spinach, pesto and garlic as well as their margherita pizza. It was very good! I would go as far and say it was the best pizza I had ALL YEAR. To top it off, they even have fresh baked goods! I had the red velvet cheesecake. Man oh man. It was so scrumptious that I didn't even share with my hubby (sorry hubs). I would definitely come back over and over and over.....

Good atmosphere, clean interior, quick service, piping hot pizza out of the oven! And of course cannot forget the fantastic cheesecake! You wont believe it until you try it! Dave is super friendly! We had the house pizza (surf side...???)!!! Doesn't matter the name, they'll know what you're asking for. :)

Super, duper yummy pizza and very friendly service! We stopped in for a quick bite and the place was great! Very affordable (2 huge slices and a drink combo for under $8). Pizza was made with high quality ingredients and toppings were plentiful. We had a side of their homemade ranch dressing and it was really good! We would definitely return when visiting the area!!

After surfing at Ocean Beach we decided we needed pizza. OMG we were not disappointed !!! This place has truly the closest thing to pizza from back east. Thin crisp crust to die for. A must eat at. Also prices very reasonable.

Great selection of pizza, pastas, sandwiches and pastries in OB. I always order the Chicken Bacon Ranch or classic Surfrider. Always order the cheesy garlic bread with marinara sauce. So good. Pretty decent beer selection for a small pizza shop. Bottles only for on site consumption but they regularly have local brews from Ballast Point and Stone along with a few Dogfish Head (DE). Usually about 10 different choices. Staff is always very friendly, helpful and fast. No delivery but you can always have a beer while waiting for take out!

  • V G.

Man, this place is amazing! The food is great--absolutely delicious pizza. The food comes fast--because I'm always hungry when I stop in. Plus the staff (especially the counter guy--he's hilarious) are super friendly. Love this place enough to instantly become a regular. Definitely check it out (the barbecue chicken is really good, so is pepperoni & sausage). 10/10 would recommend.

  • Packy F.

They just redesigned their whole dining area and are almost done with the porch. They just threw in some state of the art taps for draft beer and they have specials from 3 to 5 pm. The pizza is amzing, try the Buffalo chicken or the garlic one. The desserts are heavy and addicting.

  • Ali E.

As an East-coast pizza snob, it has been murder trying to find decent pizza in California. Surfrider passes muster, which, let me say is a high compliment. The crust is appropriately thin and crisp - not doughy or tough or chewy - and the toppings are solid. The guys who run the place are always super friendly, and they've got a pretty decent beer and dessert selection as well if you're just stopping by for a slice. I have yet to find a pizza place that does better within take-out radius.

Hillary is great. We are Obecians and love the new micro brew tap system. Surf's up to Surf Rider.

Delicious, fresh tasting ingredients, perfectly thin and crisp yet chewy crust. Extremely friendly and accommodating staff! My only wish is that they delivered! I enjoyed their Surfrider with goat cheese rather than Gorgonzola :)

Some of the best pizza I have ever had! I could eat here every night. We ordered to go and ate in our hotel room. I don't know when I'll be back in that area but I'll be sure to stop in for a slice when am.

This is small, but the food is great. The outside patio area is great and they allow dogs. The people are really nice. Pricing is good. We ordered OB Deluxe which was great the crust was thin and crispy. Topping were good not over cooked or undercooked. It wasn't swimming in grease either. Great place to eat at.

Every summer we take a trip to California, this being the 4th year in a row. The first year we stumbled upon Surf Rider and its become a tradition. It never disappoints! I am not a huge fan of pizza but this place is outta this world good. Anytime I visit Ocean Beach I will be eating at Surf Rider, you should too.

Wow I'm feeling pretty bummed right about now. I've been here quite a few times. Last night we stopped in and I was confused by one of the employees who looked like another guy who worked there. I was wondering why he was looking at me like he had no idea who we were lol. I ended up asking him you're the owner right and from Boston and he said no the owners are ------- and ------- I can't remember but I think they were women and I said what??? What about the guy from Boston??? He said " he's never been the owner and just left us to work for another company" I feel duped we have been coming here for s few years now and the guy from Boston had us believing he was the owner. In fact we loved the guy! He was funny awesome and way nicer then this other guy. This guy was complaining that he was working 20 days straight and can't wait to go home. I for sure felt like we were bothering him being there. The pizza slices were old and not properly cut so he was ripping them apart with his fingers which I noticed he never washed even after petting a dog and allowing the dog to put its paws on the counter. The food which normally is fantastic was not good. The customer service which normally is fun and inviting was boring, and lacked that OB home feeling. It's not that we won't come back but I'm feeling a bit duped that our fav Boston owner that we've come to support his small business it not actually the owner and no longer works there. And this employee that does work there seems to hate his job. Just sucks

Great pizza choices. By the slice or a whole pie! Homemade deserts. Near the beach. Appears to be a local favorite as the staff new people by their first names.

The food deserves 4 stars, but considering how friendly the staff are, I gave them five! Let me just give you one example. The other day, my buddy and I were surfing at OB jetty. After three long are tiring hours, we ditched ours board to get some pizza. Once I got there, I realized that I forgot my wallet at home. I had to pay for my meal in quarters. The cashier there felt bad for me, and gave my friend and me free drinks, and a tax free meal. If that isn't great customer value, then I don't know what is. They're always so friendly and welcoming at Surf Rider, and the pizza is great as well (get the Surfrider pizza)!!!!

  • Tiffany T.

It's kind of random that there's a pizza cafe in the middle of a semi-residential block, but truly, Surfrider is my second favorite pizza joint in OB. I even love this place more than Pizza Port! (There! I said it!). Fortunately, the place I stay is across the street, so I take advantage. Their crust is crispy, light, chewy, and is always the perfect ratio to the toppings. After eating there, I don't feel that I overdosed on grease and carbs, but instead is left with a very flavorful aftertaste. If you are quite hungry, they have a 2 slice + drink special that you can take advantage of. Just like what everyone else recommend, the Surfrider Pizza & carrot cake cookies are fantastic. If you don't have a strong heart (or tongue) for garlic, I highly recommend the OB Deluxe. Mmmmm I think I'm gonna head over right now to grab a slice...

  • Carla T.

Love the name, the location, and the desserts were great! The pizza was just not that great, a bit greasy, not sure what was missing. Maybe I am just spoiled from so many other amazing pizza places?

    (3)
  • Terri T.

I am not sure what the big deal people find this pizza place is but I have never been super impressed. I like garlic as much as the next person but this place uses it like it's the main ingredient on their pizzas. Pluses- pizza by the slice, quick and fast, close to the beach, open later, they have some decent desserts.

    (2)
  • Ali H.

We live down the street and get slices to go all the time! It's almost too convenient ;) the surfrider slice is by far the best! Roasted garlic yummmmm! About half of the deserts I've had were good too. The chocolate cake and peanut butter choc Rice Krispie are amazing!! Don't care too much for the cupcakes. Great iced tea in the summer too!

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
